    Celebrating Purim

    Purim is a special and happy festival. Hamataschen, three cornered Purim cakes filled with sweetened poppy seeds are special Purim delicacies. Shalach manot, Purim gifts, are exchanged between people; we put on masks and dress up in Purim costumes and have parties. In the synagogues, the Scroll of Esther is read aloud. In Israel today, Purim is carnival time. Everyone takes to the streets where they watch Purim parades and masqueraders who dance and sing.

    Introduction

    Sad and blue? Purim is the answer. It's a laugh, it's cheap and it's not too difficult to do. Hear the Megillah, 'Boo!' at Haman's name, dress up, eat some Hamantaschen and have a swinging party. But there is more to Purim than a bit of innocent fun to cheer us all up. Despite appearances, Mordechai and Esther are not quaint characters in a cute fairy tale.
