  • The clothing industry is worth billions.
The latest fashions are splashed all over
magazines and billboards. Are we all
fashion victims? Is there a Jewish way to dress?

    Introduction

Questioning what we normally take for granted is often challenging but always enlightening: Why do we care what we look like? Why do we own more clothes than books? Why are there so many fashion shops? Let's start with a really basic question: why do we wear clothes at all? After all, animals don't! To answer, we must travel back to the dawn of time...

    Joseph's jacket

"And Jacob loved Joseph best of all his sons... and he made a colourful jacket for him." (Genesis 37:3)

A flashy jacket is at the very centre of this well known bible story. This garment was a precious gift from father to son, but it became the catalyst for the brothers rejection of Joseph. Why so much fuss about a jacket? Again we see how significant clothing really is. What we wear shows the world who we are. Seeing Joseph kited out like that infuriated his brothers because it emphasised the already strained family relationships. It is the constant visibility of clothing that makes it so potent and precious.
