  • Unfortunately, world history is full of prejudice and hate. It is still around today. What is the root of racism and how do we, as Jews, combat it?

This chapter of the JAM PACKED BIBLE is based on the work of Dr. Eric Friedman of the Jewish Council for Racial Equality.

    Introduction

We will deal with four important issues:

    (i) factors that contribute to prejudice
(ii) Jewish experience of racism in this country
(iii) some Jewish attitudes towards prejudice
(iv) what we can do to change things

    Definitions

Prejudice and discrimination are attitudes that can apply to all kinds of things. However, in this context we will only use them to refer to people.

PREJUDICE - prejudging and disliking individual people or groups just because of their race, religion, sexuality, culture or background.

DISCRIMINATION - treating individual people or groups unfairly or differently because of their race, religion etc.

RACISM - abusive or aggressive behaviour towards individual people or groups just because of their race, religion etc.

There is a clear pattern here: feelings of prejudice can lead you to discriminate against someone or some group which may eventually lead you to physically attack them as a racist. Thus prejudice is often the starting point. An anti-Semite is someone who dislikes, discriminates or persecutes Jews.
